SPORTS HISTORY

The history of sports in Singapore began in the 19th Century when the Colonials looked to sports activities to while away their time while waiting for news from home (United Kingdom). This led to the development of private sports and recreation clubs such as the Cricket Club, the Singapore Recreation Club, Singapore Swimming Club, Hollandse Club and others. With the influx of immigrants from China, India and other parts of the world, communal clubs such as the Chinese Swimming Club, the Indian Association, the Malay Football Club and others began to sprout to serve their own communities. All these clubs played a major role in promoting sports in Singapore in the early days.

This section is segregated into 5 main areas  - Sports in Colonial Times, Sports in Independent Singapore, Sporting Events, Sports Clubs and Sports Facilities. The Sports Milestones provide the timeline that traces sports development in Singapore.
