At only 38 years old, Sam Goh Heng Soon is a veteran in Tenpin Bowling. He has been representing Singapore since the 1980s.
In 1986, he won a silver medal with Patrick Wee in the doubles event at the prestigious World FIQ Championships in Helsinki. Their performance was highly commendable, as they had to fight for every pin against 113 teams from 44 countries. In addition, Sam came in seventh in the men’s Masters even though this was his first world competition.
Sam was also a member of the National team to the 18th SEA Games at Chiang Mai, Thailand in 1995. They swept a total of 5 gold medals for bowling.
A newly crowned national champion in 1996, Sam clinched 5th place in a field of more than 70 top international bowlers at the World Cup in Northern Ireland. Four months earlier, Sam was also part of the National Men’s team that won the silver medal at the Asian FIQ championship in Seoul, Korea.
For these consistent and outstanding achievements, Sam was crowned the best Sportsman of the Year in 1996.
