Ronald Susilo made Singapore sporting history with his title as the Sportsman of the Year. He is the first badminton player to win the Singapore Sports Awards since it began in 1967.
In the short span since he started playing for Singapore in 2002, Ronald has helped put the nation back on the badminton world stage again.
He created one of Singapore 's most significant Olympic moments when he beat Lin Dan from China , the world number 1, in the Athens Olympic Games 2004. From there, he progressed to the last eight in the men's singles competition.
“It feels really great to beat top Chinese players!” he says.
Another memorable feat in 2004 was when he scored his first major men's singles title in the prestigious Japan Open 2004. He also became the first Singaporean since 1968 to play in the semi-finals of the premier All England Championships. Ronald rounded out his fantastic year with a career-high ranking of sixth in the world in November 2004.
Ronald attributes his achievements in 2004 to “a lot of hard work, dedication and teamwork”.
On the future, he says, “I will continue to work hard and bring glory to Singapore. I also look forward to more Singaporeans coming out to support all our players.
