Twenty-four year old Lee Wung Yew is the second male shooter to have won the Sportsman of the Year award since its inception in 1967. His excellent performance at the 15th South East Asia (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur last year not only brought glory to himself but to his team as well. He clinched the gold medal in the Trap Event, striking 181 out of 200 birds.

Wung Yew's sharp shooting helped shooting helped the Singapore team secure the gold in the team event. He was also the best shooter in the team.


1997

Lee Wung Yew, age 32, is the leading Singapore shooter in Trap shooting. Wung Yew won four Gold medals in the 19th SEA Games in October 1997 in Jakarta : two in Individual Trap and Double Trap and two in Team Trap and Double Trap. In November of the same year, Wung Yew also won the Gold medal in the 2nd Commonwealth Shooting Championships Individual Trap Event. In doing so, Wung Yew beat the best among 30 Commonwealth Trap Shooters, scoring 145 points, which was one point better than the 1994 Asian games Record. He also won the Team Gold medal in the South East Asia Shooting Association Championships in Taipei.

Wung Yew has shown commitment in his sport since winning the Sportsman of The year 1989 Award. For his sporting excellence and sportsmanship, Lee Wung Yew's is awarded The Sportsman of The Year, a second time in 1997.
