SHEER QUALITY
Going by the sheer quality of performances, bowler Jazreel Tan stood out prominently in 2007 for her fine showing at the World Women’s Bowling Championships Masters final in September.
At the event held in Mexico, the 18 year-old showed all her fighting instincts. Despite taking on the highly experienced Diandra Asbaty of America in the best of five games title shoot-out, the young Singaporean more than held her own before losing narrowly (2-3).
The silver medal – on the global stage, no less – is a clear affirmation of her tremendous talent. It marks how much she has stepped up since she came into the limelight – first in 2004 with medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games and the Singapore Open (Youth Division) and then in 2005 when she clinched SEA Games Silver at the Masters final. In 2006, she was the woman’s Open Masters Champion in the 37th AIA Singapore National Bowling Championship.
This year, the youngster has already shown her determination to continue her winning ways with her triumph at the 31st Malaysian International Open held in Kuala Lumpur. More is expected of her in the coming months and years. Meanwhile, however, she certainly deserves to bask in glory as Singapore’s new Sportsgirl of the year
2008
One of the top talents from the Singapore Sports School, the past two years have been punctuated with new heights in achievements for the gutsy athlete who is only nineteen years old.
Jazreel followed up her World Women's championship medal in 2007 with a hatful of international achievements in 2008. The youngster clinched gold in the mixed doubles with Remy Ong at the 2008 Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championships in Belfast; she also earned a silver for the women's single and doubles division and a bronze for the team division. The nineteen year old added to her medal tally by clinching gold at the 31st Malaysian International Open. Jazreel also received team Bronze medals at both the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championship and the 10th World Youth Bowling Championship, anchoring the team on both occasions. Jazreel scored the highest among her team at the 10th World Youth Bowling Championship.
Blessed with sporting talent, Jazreel highlights her proudest sporting moment is winning the Masters Silver and Team bronze in 2005 SEA Games. She is currently the female spokesperson for the NSA sponsor, Canon, and was recently honoured by the sponsors of the Singapore Bowling Federation for her outstanding performances in 2008.
For her consistency and achievements in 2008, Jazreel is a deserving recipient of the 2009 award for Sportsgirl of the Year and serves as an inspiration to young Singapore athletes.
