SPORTING HEROES > ROLL OF HONOUR
One of two galleries in the Sports Museum to honour Singapore's outstanding athletes, the Roll of Honour showcases recipients of the annual Best Sportsman, Sportswoman, Coach, Team, Sportsboy and Sportsgirl awards.
The Best Sportsman & Sportswoman of the Year awards were implemented by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) in 1967 in recognition of outstanding sports achievements. Following this, the Coach of the Year award was implemented in 1969 and subsequently, meritorious and other awards were also presented. These sports award schemes were initiated to encourage our athletes and coaches at a time when there were few incentives and little recognition.
The Singapore Sports Council launched the Sportsboy and Sportsgirl Awards in 1978. These cash awards serve to recognise and reward the quality achievements in sports by young people below 18 years of age in Singapore. Selection is based on performance at national and international meets and consistency in performance during the year under review. Awards are also presented for meritorious and good performance.
